It’s Elvis Week in Memphis, Tennessee! The official dates for the festivities are Tuesday August 10th to Monday August 16th, but fans from around the world started arriving days ahead of time. This year has special significance as the faithful continue the year-long celebration honoring the 75th anniversary of Elvis’ birth. If there is any doubt as to just how popular The King of Rock remains, one only needs to observe the thousands of fans who will converge on his hometown this week.
Events for the week will include finals for The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, fan club events, charity fund raisers and celebrity guests. Also, a special showing of “Elvis on Tour”, a newly remastered version of the concert documentary.
The centerpiece of every Elvis Week is the annual Candlelight Vigil which will be held on August 15th starting at 8:30PM. Thousands of fans will gather at the gates of Graceland for their chance to walk the driveway to Elvis’ grave in remembrance of the man who changed pop music and culture back in the 50′s. The famous music gates will remain open until all in the procession have done so.
At home in New Jersey the August edition of my Elvis Summer Festival will feature a “Birthday Bash” and I’ll be performing The King’s popular “Aloha from Hawaii Concert.” Similar events will take place in various parts of the United States and abroad. None will rival the Memphis celebration, but all will honor the life and career of Elvis Presley an American icon loved by millions around the world.
